A shared server is a Web server that hosts many different websites, each on a different partition. This differs from a dedicated server, which hosts only one website. Many small businesses opt for a website on a shared server because it tends to be less expensive than a dedicated server. In addition, responsibility for server maintenance on a shared server falls on the Web host and not the website owner. On the other hand, shared Web hosting can limit the amount of bandwidth and disk space allotted to a website. In addition, because websites on a shared server typically share an IP address, one website’s participation in spamming or other undesirable Internet practices can, in theory, negatively affect the reputation of all websites on that server. Some shared Web hosting services offer a private IP address for each website that exists on a server.
