Duplicate content is a common SEO technical issue. Content that exactly matches content found on other websites to as external duplicate content. It can be caused by scrapers, syndication to partners, feeds or even theft. Content that exactly matches content found within the same website is referred to as internal duplicate content. It can be caused by parameterization, content fragmentation (also referred to as “thin content”) or a variety of other factors. Search engines provide a number of tools to indicate authoritative versions of pages in cases of duplicate content, such as rel=“canonical” (see also Canonicalization) and parameter handling tools within Webmaster Tools and Search Console suites.
