Question: When can you legally publish a picture?

I just got an email with some “Joke” pictures….made me laugh, and I thought “Hey, I think others might get a laugh from these comics, I’ll blog these”…..but then I thought….”I don’t have copyright, so I can’t publish them”.

Is that right….unless you have the copyright to a picture, you can’t publish it?

  1. Thats about right; in fact, at least one stock photography site pays a company that runs bots which scour the internet for their images. When they find one used without a license, they send the website owner an invoice in the four figures. This can pose quite a problem for forum owners when users post copyrighted pics.

  2. I say publish it and comply with any C&D letter. IANAL but I’m pretty sure you have 24 hours after being served to take down any infringing material.

Yes I have recieved C&Ds. Yes I have complied. No I have not been sued yet.
