Revisiting Web Standards and Your Website: Opportunities & Challenges
- January 6, 2012 - Posted by Ninja Bonnie to Search Engine Optimization, Tips and Tricks, Website Quality
- A colleague recently lent me an awesome book about web standards, a fairly famous one, called Designing with Web Standards By Jeffery Zeldman and Ethan Marcotte. It is not your usual techy read, it makes a good case for the importance of web standards generally, addressing important counterpoints such as why are web standards still important despite that fact that browsers are willing to render code that is sometimes grotesquely invalid and despite the fact...

Nature vs. Nurture – Old Sites, Exact Matches, Branded Sites, and You
- August 14, 2011 - Posted by marketingninja to Search Engine Optimization
- Nature vs. Nurture, it has been argued in the liberal arts since the 1800′s: are we defined by some inherent features of our being or are we a product of our environment. Can a new website out rank an aged website? Can you beat that exact match site that just won’t budge? Can a non-branded site beat out branded sites? Can you ‘nurture’ your site to overcome the inherent advantage of exact match, site age,...

The SEO Mirror Test – Is Your Website Really Breathing??
- June 27, 2011 - Posted by marketingninja to Google, Search Engine Optimization, Tips and Tricks
- A while ago, while on a flight somewhere, I forget where now, I picked up a book titled The Mirror Test: Is Your Business Really Breathing by Jeffery W. Hayzlett. You know those little airport micro bookstores where you try to kill part of your 3 hour layover, yeah, one of those. This particular book was about measuring the health of your business. Basically, it talked about how there are several basic indicators of if...

The Blekko SEO Guide You’ve Been Waiting To Read
- November 7, 2010 - Posted by marketingninja to Search Engine Optimization
- It’s a funny time to let your search engine loose for public beta, right when another one, cuil, shuts down its servers. I know that there is also a lot of the talk around about Blekko, even on techcrunch and cnet, that it can’t compete with 10 ton gorilla Google. Even CEO, Rich Skrenta, of DMOZ and Topix fame, concedes that, “we’re cool with being number three.” There is also a lot of criticism of...

Internet Archive Wayback Machine appears to be updating!
- July 15, 2010 - Posted by Jim Boykin to Search Engine Optimization
- A few days ago we started to notice some new archives from Internet Archive Wayback Machine. From what I recall, the last dates that the wayback machine was showing for archived sites was the summer of 2008. We’re now seeing some sites showing archived dates right up to 5 days ago. It looks like bigger sites are starting to show newer archived dates…could this be the start of a big rollout of updated wayback information (isn’t that and...
