I took a Twitter break for a number of reasons for several weeks. It was actually my second Twitter break. This time, I was besieged with offers for everything imaginable, but mostly a bunch of people selling Twitter services to each other. I tried to get away from the Ashton/Oprah/CNN nonsense and found the MLM crowd broke through the force field containing them.

I will put an affiliate link in a product review. (One of our book sites sells copies with a headline slamming the book as "Worst Ever..." and bashing the book) I may put an affiliate link in Twitter on one of our ecommerce company site's streams.

But on my personal stream? Nah, my integrity is worth more than a 6% cut of someone buying an eBook.

I'm an SEO person and also a computer scientist (active) - I have a real problem with engineering sites to do well in Google, whilst also working on things to cut through the issue of engineered sites ranking higher than more authoritative sites. Not everyone approves of me obviously.

I follow you on Twitter Lisa and your tweets are very genuine (I hope the Sears issue resolves itself soon. In fact I only follow people who are genuine and who really get involved. I've connected with some cool people. I don't think Twitter is the place to market your stuff, unless like Dell you're providing a customer service where interested people can sign up because they actually want to hear about updates and stuff. That is genuine too.

Great post. I always like to think of the whole marketer/human situation like this: If you're a good marketer, nobody will notice you're doing it.

Of course, this only works if what you're marketing is actually providing value. As soon as you start selling snake oil, well, everyone will start kicking you in the face.
